Join us at BCIT’s Zero Energy Buildings Lab for an interactive session on Smart Shade Solutions—innovative, passive strategies to minimize overheating in residential buildings. Discover how adaptable shading techniques can naturally keep indoor spaces cool during the warmer months and, when repositioned in winter, allow for beneficial solar heat gain.

This session will provide practical insights into selection of versatile shading systems that adapt to seasonal changes, keeping interiors cooler in summer and harnessing sunlight for warmth in winter. Perfect for builders and designers interested in sustainable, cost-effective, and energy-saving methods, this session combines theory with hands-on observation of high-performance shading solutions.

 

Learning Outcomes:

 

  • Identify key passive shading strategies for residential buildings to reduce indoor temperatures without mechanical cooling systems.
  • Compare different types of exterior shading solutions and understand their performance in high-efficiency, energy-saving designs.
  • Discuss practical applications and benefits of passive shading systems observed in BCIT's AFRESH building.
