The BOSS House: Design and Construction of an Affordable High-Performance Home (Technical Tailgate Site Tour)

April 13, 2023 (3:00 PM - 5:00 PM) (PDT)

Description

Building Offsite Sustainable Systems (BOSS) is a flexible and sustainable housing system, designed to meet the needs of diverse communities throughout British Columbia. It's an offsite, wood-based construction solution that incorporates passive house principles, low embodied carbon materials, and 100% electric and renewable energy sources. An innovation launched by HAVAN-member b Collective, BOSS is the first open-sourced system for designing and constructing zero-carbon buildings in Vancouver.

Hosted by Chris Hill, president of b Collective and director with Passivehouse Canada, this Technical Tailgate will be a behind-the-walls discussion on this Passivehouse principals-based building system. Key topics also include:

  • Design details and how this project complies with specifications outlined in the VBBL
  • Pre-fab construction: meeting timelines, labour shortage issues, and a more streamlined solution to address high-performance building complications and metrics
  • How BOSS addresses affordability challenges
  • Looking to the future on how this type of system can be integrated as an effective solution to build the ‘missing middle’, such as duplexes and triplexes

The project is still under construction but has garnered a lot of interest from municipalities, builders and design professionals across the region, so reserve your spot for this tour.
