From Mistakes to Mastery: Key Takeaways from Five Building Envelope Investigations (Aug BBS)
From Mistakes to Mastery: Key Takeaways from Five Building Envelope Investigations (Aug BBS)
August 22, 2024 (7:30 AM - 10:00 AM) (PDT)
Description
Overview:
This presentation explores the lessons learned from the following five (Part 3 and Part 9) investigative case studies, involving building envelope failures and the resultant durability concerns for the buildings and nuisance for the occupants:
1. Moisture damage: Three-story residential complex
Part 3 construction (Existing Building)
2. Below grade water ingress: Secondary school
Part 3 construction (Existing Building)
3. Mold inside a unit: Four-story residential/commercial complex
Part 3 construction (New Building)
4. Mold along the base of basement walls: Single family house
Part 9 construction (New Building)
5. Frost and installation issues on newly replaced windows/doors: Single family house
Part 9 construction (Existing Building)
For each case study, the causes that led to the failures will be discussed, followed by the recommended measures/solutions that could have eliminated such occurrences in the first place. In exploring the solutions, we will tap into the rich reservoir of the building science knowledge and will draw upon the wisdom of the past and the innovations of the present.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this presentation, the participants will gain insights towards:
- Measures to mitigate the risks of similar occurrences in future projects.
- The importance of taking a holistic approach to building envelope design/construction.
- Building envelope solutions that support long-term durability and occupants’ comfort.
