COURSE OVERVIEW

As homeowners look to build and renovate their forever homes, it is important to consider our aging population in general, and more specifically aging in place, when specifying decorative lighting, for both the interior and the outside environments. Good lighting is key to creating successful living environments and is essential to ensure safety, as well as health, and quality of life.

In this presentation, participants will learn

  • How ADA requirements, foot candle and other lighting measurements, and today's energy efficient lighting sources impact lighting choices; and
  • How to specify decorative lighting that meets the human needs, safety and health considerations necessary for an aging population.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Why lighting tops the list of environmental features affecting both the health and the quality of life of an aging population.
  2. The ADA requirements for decorative lighting and how to apply them in lighting choices for senior living.
  3. How to specify decorative lighting that has appropriate foot candle, lumens and other lighting measurements to satisfy requirements and recommendations of national, state and local regulations.
  4. How to choose energy efficient decorative lighting that enhances and complements natural light, and learn guidelines to ensure that the lighting needs of older adults are met for both quality and quantity of light.
