Join HAVAN's Women's Council for a tour by award-winning builder Naikoon Contracting, and ONE SEED Architecture, at their multi-unit passive house duplex, currently under construction. Led by Naikoon's project manager, Eri Uhthoff, and architect Allison Holden-Pope, these two dynamic women will share the inside design and building details of the project, on track for Passive House + Certification.
Design
The architecture of Bird’s Wing Passivhaus + is modern and impactful in its simplicity from the exterior. A folding roof line, like the wing of a bird in flight, features prominently in the front elevation. The design is rooted in nature, with a modern take on a gabled profile. The footprint of the home is continuous from foundation to roof, and incorporates a single notch in plan to create architectural interest while keeping the thermal envelope simple. The planning of the duplex was an exercise in optimization of space, like a creative three-dimensional puzzle of interlocking pieces.
Building Standards
Passive House Plus: This home exceeds classic Passive House requirements and is on-track for Passive House Plus certification with on-site generation of renewable energy thanks to a simple solar array over half of the upper roof. Passive House Plus is a newer standard created by PHI to acknowledge projects which produce approximately as much energy as the residents consume for an annual net-zero energy balance (reference: passipedia.org).
On-site generation of renewable energy is an ideal complement to the efficiency of the Passive House Standard, where the heating demand is so low, that PV systems can be modest in size and therefore also in cost. Even with multiple suites in this compact duplex, thirty-three photovoltaic panels on the roof provide sufficient on-site collection of solar energy to offset the energy consumed by the households, when paired with our high-performance envelope and other features such as drain water heat recovery.
The project's rough-ins phase will be fully completed by the date of the event with the main activities focusing on exterior finishes, garage roofing and interior walls insulation commencement.
SPEAKERS:
Eri Uhthoff, Project Manager, Naikoon Contracting: Eri's background includes architecture, renewable energies and project management expertise. Originally from Mexico, she now calls Vancouver home having also spent time living in Germany and Spain whilst studying for qualifications in renewable energies and sustainability.
Allison Holden-Pope, Architect AIBC, ONE SEED Architecture: Allison founded One SEED in 2008, leaving a comfortable position at an integrated architecture / engineering / construction firm to pursue her passion for evocative and sustainable residential design. As a mother of two young and completely crazy boys, her work is also influenced by the daily adventures and pragmatic realities of raising an active family. As a local leader in residential sustainability and Passive House, Allison believes in being an “open source”, and has shared lessons learned at various speaking engagements and conferences.
